French Robotic Cup - Power supply 🪫

Hello from Robotik UTT in Troyes!

This year, our team participated in the French Robotics Cup centered around the exciting theme, “Winter is Coming”! :snowflake:

Today, we are thrilled to share the core electronic components that powered our robot’s main power supply PCB, designed entirely in KiCad.

The Power Source

First of all, the robot is powered by a Parkside drill battery featuring an integrated BMS (Battery Management System). This choice made our testing and operations significantly safer compared to using traditional LiPo batteries.

Smart Voltage Regulation & Flexibility

To feed our various sub-systems, we utilized multiple regulators to step down the voltage to our exact needs:

  • The Main Controller Board: (Jetson Nano Orin) We used a high-performance TDK Lambda point-of-load regulator. The main advantage of this regulator is its incredible flexibility—it can deliver up to 10A of current, and the output voltage can be dynamically adjusted just by changing a single resistor connected to the TRIM pin.

Design Win: Later in the project, when we decided to change how we powered this controller, we didn’t have to redesign the board! We just swapped the resistor accordingly.

  • Peripheral Cards: We integrated Traco Power modules to deliver rock-solid, regulated 5V and 12V rails. These were dedicated to powering our heavy-lifting components: the actuators and the actuator controllers.

We utilized the Beautiful PCB service paired with the Stellar Stencil option to ensure our power supply PCB was robust, reliable, and easy to solder under tight competition deadlines.
