IFEC - PURE Power Electronics - Affordable Bidirectional Onboard Charger for Electric Vehicles

Hello fellow inventors,

we are the IFEC student team from Reutlingen University, called PURE Power Electronics. Our mission is to build an “Affordable Bidirectional Onboard Charger for Electric Vehicles” and to win this year’s International Future Energy Challenge.

An onboard charger is an AC/DC converter that transforms grid voltage into a regulated DC voltage for charging the high-voltage battery of an electric vehicle .

What makes this year’s challenge especially exciting for us is that, for the first time, we are collaborating with AISLER. AISLER provides us with high-quality PCBs for our mainboard, sensor boards and half-bridges. In the picture below, you can see our current sensor PCB.

The challenges we are facing include achieving an efficiency greater than 92%, a total volume of only 500 ml, enabling bidirectional power conversion and supporting both 120 VAC and 230 VAC operation. These requirements make the project challenging, but also extremely exciting.

On March 22, 2026, our team participated in the semifinals in San Antonio, Texas. We presented our onboard charger prototype against 12 other teams and successfully convinced the judges, qualifying us for the finals on July 13 in Belgium.

We would like to sincerely thank AISLER for providing us with excellent PCBs. You have played a key role in helping us reach this stage of the competition .

Stay tuned for more updates on our onboard charger!
