Jaakko Myyri, an Amsterdam-based artist, used a set of bare Beautiful Boards in his new-media installation ‘Slack Storage’, in the White Nights exhibition at AaltoSiilo as part of the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture programme. The show opened on 03/06/2026 and ran until 14/06/2026. Jaakko showed photos of his work on Instagram. Additionally, he sent us some photos and allowed us to show them to you:
In the artist’s own words:
Slack Storage is a composition of custom-designed circuit boards, server hardware, and electronic components through which I explore themes of residual obsolescence, technological autonomy, and unregulated agency. The installation monitors its own internal temperature and uses thermal feedback to autonomously coordinate a wireless communication protocol that drives lighting and motor actuation throughout the sculpture. While temperature determines how individual functions are activated, I also treat thermal variation conceptually as an indexing space in which timings, velocities, and communication between subsystems are distributed, allowing each part of the sculpture to behave like a body part within a larger thermally reactive organism.
By borrowing the language of embodiment from the human body and relocating it into technical infrastructure, the work examines how contemporary communication networks increasingly operate as autonomous environments. As cable coils begin to acquire forms that resemble body parts within large fragmented organisms, hidden skeletal structures emerge. Accumulations of coiled cable appear as figures resembling rib cages, spines, and anatomically formed cabinets.
Full material list: custom-designed PCBs, a server-room cooling fan tray, a thermistor, various electronics, power supplies and aluminium profiles.
Our part is small and worth stating plainly. The custom-designed boards are bare Beautiful Boards Jaakko ordered from us and we fabricated in Europe. Everything the work does and means is his.
