Use 3D Models for Realistic Component

Use 3D Models for Realistic Component Clearance Checks

Always assign 3D models to your components. In KiCad 8.0+, use the Edit > Update Footprints from Library feature to automatically pull 3D models for common components.

Once placed:

1. Switch to the 3D viewer (View > 3D Viewer)

2. Visually inspect tight spaces between components

3. Look for height conflicts with enclosures or other boards

This simple step catches mechanical fit issues early that 2D layouts miss, like tall capacitors blocking connectors or heatsinks touching case lids.
